The Story of the HAppy Cafe
Oct 1st, 2026 • 5 MIN READ
At Hampstead Academy, we talk often about inquiry, project-based learning, and authentic experiences. But the real power of these approaches becomes visible when students take what they are learning and create something that has a purpose beyond the classroom.
The HAppy Cafe is one of our favorite examples.
Student-run and enjoyed by our entire school community, the HAppy Cafe has been operating since 2025, when a group of Middle School students took on an ambitious challenge: transform a downstairs storage area into a fully functioning cafe.
Today, when the HAppy Cafe opens, it is an event. Parents can stop in for a coffee and a scone. Classes have scheduled times to visit. Menus go home ahead of time so students can decide what they would like to purchase and bring their money on Cafe Day.
And when the doors open, the rest is pure pride.
It Started With an Expedition
Before our students ever designed a menu or served their first customer, they needed to understand what makes a cafe work.
So, naturally, we went to one.
As part of their expeditionary learning, students visited a local cafe where they had the opportunity to interview the owner, observe the business in operation, take notes, study the decor and layout, and ask questions about what happens behind the scenes.
They weren't simply visiting a cafe. They were conducting research.
Students returned to Hampstead Academy ready to discuss what they had seen and, more importantly, what they wanted for their own space. How should it look? How should customers move through it? What would they serve? What would make people want to come back? What jobs would need to be done? How could an unused storage area become a place where people genuinely wanted to gather?
Those questions became the beginning of the HAppy Cafe.
From Storage Room to Student-Run Business

Transforming the space required students to move from imagining to doing. They considered the physical design, decor, menu, operations, customer experience, and responsibilities involved in running a real cafe.
And then they opened the doors.
The HAppy Cafe quickly became more than a school project. It became part of the Hampstead Academy community.
Students experience the excitement of welcoming their classmates, teachers, and families into something they created. Younger students look forward to their scheduled Cafe visits. Families receive menus at home. Students practice making choices and handling money. Parents have the chance to enjoy a cup of coffee while experiencing a little piece of student life at HA.
Behind the counter, however, there is much more learning happening than our customers may realize.
Where Math Meets Entrepreneurship

Running a cafe creates authentic reasons to use academic skills.
Students calculate expenses, revenue, profits, and losses. They examine which products sell and which do not. They consider pricing and purchasing. They analyze areas that need improvement and discuss what they might do differently the next time the Cafe opens.
They also learn that running a successful business isn't simply about making something people want to buy. It requires understanding your customers.
That leads naturally to conversations about marketing.
How do we get people excited about the HAppy Cafe? What should we put on our menu? How do we promote a special event? What would encourage families to participate? What new opportunity could we create?
These are no longer hypothetical questions from a worksheet. There are real customers, real costs, real decisions, and real outcomes.
When One Idea Leads to Another
Perhaps one of the best examples of this happened last spring.
During conversations about marketing and ways the HAppy Cafe could better serve our community, students developed the idea of hosting a Mother's Day Tea for our PreK students and their families.
Suddenly, their cafe became something more.
Students had to think about their audience, the experience they wanted to create, what they would serve, how they would prepare, and how they could make the event special for some of the youngest members of our school and the people they love.
That is the beauty of authentic learning: one project creates the conditions for the next question, the next idea, and the next opportunity to contribute.
Learning That Lives Beyond the Classroom
The HAppy Cafe represents what we want learning to look like at Hampstead Academy.
It began with an authentic experience in the community. Students observed. They interviewed. They asked questions. They took notes. Then they brought that knowledge back to school and used it to design something of their own.
Along the way, they have practiced mathematics, communication, collaboration, design, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, marketing, problem-solving, and reflection. Just as importantly, they have experienced the satisfaction of creating something that brings joy to their community.
The HAppy Cafe isn't a simulation of a business.
It is their business.
And every time those doors open, our students have another opportunity to learn, adjust, improve, welcome their customers, and take pride in what they have built.
At Hampstead Academy, that is what we mean by authentic learning: students don't just learn about the world. They learn by participating in it.
