PRE-K EXPERIENCE

Keeping the Wonder Alive

Young children are naturally curious. They wonder, experiment, build, take things apart, ask endless questions, make surprising connections, and try again when something doesn’t work. At Hampstead Academy, we believe the best early childhood education keeps that wonder alive.

Our Pre-K program for 3- and 4-year-olds is built around play, exploration, and authentic experiences that invite children to think, question, create, and solve problems. Rather than rushing children toward formal academics, we give them the time, materials, experiences, and guidance they need to develop the habits of mind that make meaningful learning possible.

Inspired by the work of John Dewey, Jean Piaget, and Eleanor Duckworth, and informed by the Reggio Emilia approach, our program begins with a simple belief: children learn by doing. They construct understanding through their experiences—by touching, building, observing, wondering, talking, testing ideas, making mistakes, and trying again.

Play With Purpose

Play is not separate from learning in our Pre-K classrooms. Play is how young children learn.

A block tower that keeps falling becomes an investigation of balance and structure. A puddle outside inspires questions about water, weather, and evaporation. A disagreement during dramatic play becomes an opportunity to practice communication, empathy, and problem-solving. A child's fascination with insects might grow into days of observation, drawing, counting, research, storytelling, and discovery.

Teachers carefully observe these moments and use children's questions and interests to extend their thinking. Rather than simply giving children answers, our educators ask questions, introduce new materials and experiences, and encourage children to develop and test their own ideas.

How Our Program Is Different

Unlike more traditional preschool settings, our Pre-K program is designed to foster independence while promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We have found that this program increases motivation, engagement, and retention in our students and promotes holistic development. Protecting Childhood While Preparing for What Comes Next

Learning extends far beyond a workshee

We believe preparing children for the future does not mean asking them to grow up faster.

It means protecting the curiosity, imagination, courage, and sense of possibility they already possess—and helping those qualities grow.

Our goal is not simply to prepare children for Kindergarten. It is to nurture children who enter their next stage of learning still eager to ask:

Why?
What if?
How could we find out?

That is what it means to keep the wonder alive.
