Shaping the Future at Hampstead Academy

Part Two: The Value

"“At Hampstead Academy, we’ve taken the proven principles of IMPACT and created our version of IMPACT Wednesdays, dedicating a minimum of 20% each week to this innovative practice,” says Head of School, Rebecca Cummings. “This undivided, focused time allows students to delve deeply into their chosen subject, without interruption, to gain a fuller understanding of it on multiple levels.” ."

IMPACT Wednesdays set Hampstead Academy apart from other educational settings, and they are an incredibly valuable part of what we offer to our students for many reasons.

Student Ownership and Personal Agency

On IMPACT Wednesdays, students are in the driver’s seat. They can choose projects that align with their interests and passions, whether it’s launching a small business, addressing an environmental issue, or exploring new technologies. This focus on student agency helps foster independence and self-motivation, empowering students to take charge of their learning and future.

By leading their own projects, students learn to set goals, manage time, and navigate challenges—skills that are not only essential for academic success but also critical for life beyond school. This personal ownership of learning builds confidence and cultivates a mindset of continuous growth and improvement.

Real-World Learning with Authentic Partners

IMPACT Wednesdays emphasize learning beyond the classroom. Students work alongside mentors and authentic community partners who provide guidance and real-world context. This collaboration allows students to see how their classroom learning applies to real-life challenges through internships, apprenticeships, or service-learning projects.

For example, students might partner with local businesses to design innovative products, work with environmental organizations on conservation efforts, or collaborate with community leaders to address social issues. These experiences enhance their academic knowledge and help them develop the skills necessary for success in today’s fast-paced, complex world.

Focus on Quality Process and Product

At Hampstead Academy, the learning process is just as important as the outcome. On IMPACT Wednesdays, students are encouraged to reflect on their work, seek mentor feedback, and iterate as needed. This emphasis on continuous improvement builds resilience and a commitment to excellence.

By the end of the year, students have developed a high-quality product or outcome, whether that’s a business plan, a research project, or a creative endeavor. They gain the satisfaction of seeing their work come to fruition, knowing they’ve put in the effort to produce something of value.

Community Participation and Contribution

A key component of IMPACT Wednesdays is giving back to the community. Students are encouraged to think of themselves as active participants in society, working on projects that benefit not only themselves but also the world around them. Whether solving local problems or contributing to global initiatives, students learn the importance of social responsibility and civic engagement.

Through these community-based projects, students develop empathy, leadership, and teamwork skills, all essential for building a more just and equitable world.

IMPACT Wednesdays In Action

Our students are currently focused on all things water. Two of our classrooms, the Navigators and the Sea Stars, recently worked in small teams to compete in the "H2Olympics" to investigate two properties of water, adhesion and cohesion. Educator, Annie Adamsky explains some of the many things the students have learned so far this semester:

"The chemical nature of the water molecule is a wonder. Water’s unique chemical structure causes it to behave in unique ways. For example, it can be attracted to other water molecules as well as to molecules of other substances, which is why water flows in rivers and streams. Because of these qualities, water can travel up the tallest Redwood Tree (379 feet) and can deliver nutrients and gasses throughout the human body."

Students will continue to investigate this theme throughout the academic year, sharing insights with each other, their families, and the community.
