Hampstead Academy Awarded Gorham Grant for Innovative Horticulture Project
Hampstead Academy is proud to announce that it has been awarded the prestigious Gorham Grant from the Hampstead Garden Club. This $500 grant, given annually in honor of the late Michael Gorham, supports student-led projects that enhance appreciation and stewardship of community resources. Hampstead Academy’s winning proposal, "Indoors to Out: Horticulture, Hydroponics, and Gardening," focuses on sustainable water management and plant growth through hands-on learning experiences.
The Indoors to Out project introduces students to horticultural practices, emphasizing the role of hydroponics in water conservation and plant growth. Given New England’s cold climate, gardeners often rely on greenhouse environments for early plant development. This project will guide students in understanding plant needs—water, oxygen, and nutrients—by utilizing hydroponic techniques indoors and transitioning to outdoor gardening in the warmer months.
The project is designed to engage students in after-school activities that are both educational and enjoyable. Learning seminars will be offered throughout the fall and winter, leading to greenhouse-based activities in early spring. The goal is to establish a sustainable, student-led club dedicated to horticulture, hydroponics, and gardening techniques.
“This initiative not only teaches our students the science behind plant growth but also fosters environmental stewardship. By involving students in hands-on hydroponics and gardening, we are preparing them to become knowledgeable and responsible caretakers of natural resources.” ---Rebecca Cummings, Head of School at Hampstead Academy
The funding from the Gorham Grant will be allocated toward the purchase of a small greenhouse and essential hydroponic equipment, including Dutch buckets, irrigation kits, and nutrient supplies. The project’s long-term vision includes maintaining the greenhouse as a hub for learning and providing starter plants to local gardens and families.
The project will be overseen by Parent Volunteers and STEAM enthusiasts Thomas Meehan and Chris Saggese, along with the innovative students at Hampstead Academy.
The Hampstead Garden Club’s continued support of educational initiatives through the Gorham Grant underscores its commitment to fostering an appreciation for nature among young learners. Hampstead Academy is honored to be a recipient and looks forward to implementing this impactful project.
